It is not something that i recommend to do but if somebody wants to know the process, I do to see why i should not share it. This is something i have done, i am now running Yosemite coming from El Capitan because of SIP and the new diskuitlity restrictions. You boot from an external Volume (lowest = the version that came with your mac), and delete from the command line everything except /Users in the Volume that you want to downgrade. Then you launch the installer from within the external Volume and /Users will not be deleted. _you have to reinstall your non Apple apps (because of library and/or system extensions) _ you might have some issues with OS X Apps because the settings have been managed by a newer version of OS X (Mail, Safari,Address Books, etc.) You agree, boot in that user and that's done.

Mac OS will display a message like " there is a user with that name in /Users, do you want to use that folder for the user you are creating ?"

You will have to reinstall all your apps (CS5,etc.)Īlas, no, you cannot migrate time machine from El capitan to Mavericks.Īs far as i am concerned, there are two ways to downgrade :ġ : You save the home folder on an external hard driveĢ : You reformat and install ( lowest = the version that came with your mac)ģ : you create a new user after 1st boot in downgraded OS and once logged into that new user, you copy the saved home folder from step 1 in /UsersĤ : once the copy is done, you go to system preferences and create a user that has got the same name and password of the copy N.B : you will have all JAPPLESEED files and folder and settings preserved but OS X apps like Mail and Safari ,etc may have issues. log out of generic admin and log into JAPPLESEED. use the same password for this "new" JAPPLESEED like the dropped JAPPLESEED Go to system preferences and create a new user with the name JAPPLESEED and tell system preferences that this new user's home is located where you dropped that (home) folder ( JAPPLESEED folder ) Drag and drop JAPPLESEED the /Users folder Create a generic admin (he will be administrator anyway)

How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple SupportĮl capitan will not allow you to install Mavericks on top of itself if you do not erase the hard drive anyway. I guess this is what you call a clean install. Install Mavericks : > on the r eformated drive, a recovery partition of Mavericks will be created during the installation process.
> If you just erase the drive (Macintosh HD), you will still have the recovery partition of El Capitan. First, use disk utility to reformat the drive (the manufacturer name of the drive, not Macinctosh HD) The Mavericks installer you have on USB, if you are sure that it is bootable by your Mac, then : (after a backup)
this is where your files are (the files of APPLESEED) provided your did not save files anywhere else in your hard drive.(otherwise, you' d better save the whole hard drive first and drag and drop those saved files in JAPPLESEED afterwards ) You should first backup /Users/ JAPPLESEED

Once that is done : USE TIME MACHINE and if you upgrade again at some point, change the time machine hard drive. > back up your files and folders in aCloud and access them from a Web interface (iCloud drive is not available in Mavericks' Finder as far as i remember) or on an external hard drive > use iCloud to sync (OSX Apps content : Mail, Safari, etc.) You will have to reinstall al your apps (CS5,etc.) N.B : you will have all your users files and folder but OS X apps like mail and Safari ,etc may have issues. log out of generic admin and log into that user. use the same password for this "new" user as the "old" user Go to system preferences and create a new user with the same name of the dropped user folder and tell system preferences that this new user's home is located where you dropped that (home) folder
Drag and drop your user home in the /Users folder do not erase > you will still have the El Capitan recovery Partition if you do not reformat the whole drive (or use another mac booting from mavericks that has got the Mavericks Installer (up to date !) and use disk utility to reformat your drive to install Mavericks) Go to a Genius Bar and ask to perform a erase and install of Mavericks Backup your user home (with files and folders that is) : drag and drop on external hard drive ( or use time machine to backup the whole computer ) Without Loosing any user files and folder : still, you will have to reinstall everything that is not in the user (s) home (s)
